Francesco Chebat, born in Trento (Italy) in 1978, studied classical music at the Milan Conservatory (piano and composition). During his studies, he started listening to jazz and jazz-rock music. He attended several seminars with teachers from Berklee College and also with Italian jazz musicians. He began performing in clubs in Milan and since then he has played with Dave Weckl, Tino Tracanna, Attilio Zanchi, Gianluigi Trovesi, Maurizio Giammarco, Giovanni Falzone, Riccardo Fioravanti, Maxx Furian, Emilio Soana, Paolo Tomelleri, JW Orchestra (directed by Marco Gotti), and many others.
He performed in festivals, jazz clubs and TV stations: Blue Note Milano, Osijek Jazz Festival, Iseo Jazz, Brianza Open Jazz Festival, Lario Festival, Valtidone festival, Match Music (Sky TV), Jazz Club Bergamo, Ivrea Jazz Club, Società del Quartetto (Bergamo), Locarno Film Festival…
He is active in various directions: as the band-leader of The Soul Mutation, as a side-man, as a composer and as an educator. Over the years, he has also played different musical styles; he worked with bluesmen, singer-songwriters and actors, showing his versatility both live and in the studio.
In 2007 he released his first CD, Imprinting, recorded with Attilio Zanchi on double bass and Marco Castiglioni on drums. This work received good reviews. All the tracks of the CD are written by Francesco.
He has been working with vocalist Martha J. as pianist and arranger. Since 2008, they produced several albums together: Pas de Deux (as a duo, mainly original tunes), Harlem Nocturne (classic jazz songs, with Roberto Piccolo on double bass, Stefano Bertoli on drums and Guido Bombardieri as guest artist), Dance Your Way to Heaven (original tunes, with Roberto Piccolo, Stefano Bertoli and Cisco Portone on percussions), That’s It! (classic jazz songs, with Roberto Piccolo and Stefano Bertoli) and No One but You (classic jazz songs, duo voice and piano).
In 2014 Martha and Francesco released an album named after the new band: The Soul Mutation. It is a trio with an unusual lineup: Martha J. on vocals, Francesco Chebat on piano and keyboards and Francesco Marzetti on drums. The band plays mainly original music, written by Martha J. and Francesco Chebat. The sound takes inspiration from jazz, r&b, funk and blends different musical sources in an original way.
He has also been working with the JW Orchestra, conducted by the saxophonist Marco Gotti. Francesco plays in the big band’s latest CD entitled Lectio Brevis on Trillo, released in 2009.
“…quello che colpisce di più è la semplicità e l’eleganza di Francesco Chebat: e questo fa della sua musica un lavoro di estremo interesse.”
Luca Labrini – Jazzitalia.net
“Francesco Chebat: essenziale, raffinato, mai casuale… mostra un’intensa distinzione interpretativa e un bel gioco evoluto, intelligente, multiforme, ricco di fantasiose intuizioni ritmiche e di virtuosismo, assecondato da un’ariosa ricercatezza armonica.”
Bruno Schiozzi – Musica Jazz
“Chebat non cerca di stupire l’ascoltatore con frenesie tecniche, ma la sua è una spinta emotiva verso la ricerca della melodia, e tanto è evidente non solo nei temi ma soprattutto nelle libere improvvisazioni…”
